What is child and adolescent autism?

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or ‘autism’ as it is more commonly known, is a group of developmental conditions that impact a person’s social skills, their ability to communicate, and their behaviour. It starts in infancy or early childhood and it can cause disruptions to a child’s skill development, such as talking, playing, and interacting with others. While the symptoms and the severity of childhood autism can vary substantially, children with autism have many obstacles to overcome and require help to live a fulfilling life.

That’s where we come in! If you think that your child is showing symptoms of autism and you are concerned about the impact on their life, we are here to help.

At Psymplicity, we follow a client-focused approach, putting your child’s mental well-being above all else to provide the personalised care and attention they need. Following a private autism assessment of their unique needs and circumstances, we will develop a bespoke treatment plan that will help alleviate their symptoms. Childhood autism can be a challenging condition to live with, but we can help your child overcome its restrictive limitations and improve their quality of life.

What are the symptoms of child autism?

Childhood autism symptoms begin in infancy, often when your child is 12-18 months or younger. The symptoms of autism in children can vary significantly both in their characteristics and severity. The symptoms a child might experience are unique to them, as is the level of impairment caused by the condition.

Main symptoms of autism spectrum disorder in children:

Communication/interaction:

Restrictive/repetitive behaviours:

These are just some of the most frequently experienced symptoms of ASD in children. In addition to the above, your child might also face high levels of stress and anxiety. Anxiety and stress are a normal part of your child’s development, but children with autism experience these types of emotions more intensely and more often than others. Often, these symptoms are misconstrued as ‘acting out’ or behaving in an unruly manner.

Attempts to explain your child’s symptoms to others can sometimes fall on deaf ears, as people may think that they are merely acting out. While many children are diagnosed with autism early on in their life, others can go for years without a diagnosis and therefore be misunderstood and treated unfairly.

At Psymplicity Healthcare, we understand your struggles, and we’re here to help. Following a thorough private autism assessment, during which we will consider the characteristics, frequency and duration of your child’s symptoms, you will receive a private autism diagnosis for your child. Our therapists and other specialists across the CAMHS teams will work with your child to help them manage and live with their ASD symptoms. We will also explain how they can stop these symptoms from affecting their education, social skills, and ability to tackle tasks. We’re not only here to listen and understand; we’re here to help.

Book an appointment to see how we can help to manage the symptoms of your child’s autism and massively improve their quality of life. During the assessment sessions, you’ll receive the diagnosis you’ve been waiting for, along with a bespoke plan of treatment for your child’s autism.

The Psymplicity approach to treating child autism

At Psymplicity Healthcare, we adopt an integrated approach to childhood autism treatment. We provide gold standard clinician-led autism assessments for children aged over 6 and adolescents. ASD is a lifelong condition, but children respond to treatment better when they are younger, and the right treatment plan can significantly improve symptoms long into adulthood. Our private autism assessment will typically take 4-5 hours, either in a single session or split over three, and comprises an initial diagnosis, assessment, testing and a comprehensive medical report with recommended treatment. The ASD assessment begins with a child behavioral review. During this, we’ll select interactive and play-based activities for your child to take part in, based on their symptoms, challenges, and goals. Alongside a supporting clinician, we’ll observe how your child interacts and score their responses, using formal testing methods to ascertain or rule out behavioural, developmental, emotional and attention deficit disorders. Secondly, we’ll invite you to an information-gathering session so that we can best understand and diagnose your child’s condition. This involves reviewing available records, observations, and interviews with you and your child. Following this session, we will create a detailed report of the results, including diagnoses and recommendations. The most effective treatment for your child may involve one or more therapies, medication, and child and parent workshops. While some children can be successfully treated without medication, it can help relieve symptoms such as irritability, aggression, hyperactivity, and anxiety. That said, we firmly believe that the solution is never to rely on medication alone. Before putting together your child’s bespoke, holistic treatment plan, we will take into account your child’s needs and your wishes along with any allergies or other conditions.
