What is child and adolescent autism?
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or ‘autism’ as it is more commonly known, is a group of developmental conditions that impact a person’s social skills, their ability to communicate, and their behaviour. It starts in infancy or early childhood and it can cause disruptions to a child’s skill development, such as talking, playing, and interacting with others. While the symptoms and the severity of childhood autism can vary substantially, children with autism have many obstacles to overcome and require help to live a fulfilling life.
That’s where we come in! If you think that your child is showing symptoms of autism and you are concerned about the impact on their life, we are here to help.
At Psymplicity, we follow a client-focused approach, putting your child’s mental well-being above all else to provide the personalised care and attention they need. Following a private autism assessment of their unique needs and circumstances, we will develop a bespoke treatment plan that will help alleviate their symptoms. Childhood autism can be a challenging condition to live with, but we can help your child overcome its restrictive limitations and improve their quality of life.
What are the symptoms of child autism?
Childhood autism symptoms begin in infancy, often when your child is 12-18 months or younger. The symptoms of autism in children can vary significantly both in their characteristics and severity. The symptoms a child might experience are unique to them, as is the level of impairment caused by the condition.
Main symptoms of autism spectrum disorder in children:
- Difficulty with communication and interaction with other people
- Restricted interests and repetitive behaviours
- Symptoms that hinder the person’s ability to function properly in school, work, and other areas of life
- Difficulty sleeping and sleep disorders

Communication/interaction:
- Little or inconsistent eye contact
- Tending not to listen to people
- Rarely sharing enjoyment of objects or activities with others
- Failing to, or being slow to, respond to someone calling their name
- Difficulty following the back and forth of conversation
- Often talking at length about a favourite subject without noticing that others are not interested or without giving others a chance to respond
- Expressions, movements, and gestures that do not match what is being said
- An unusual tone of voice that may sound sing-song or flat and robot-like
- Trouble empathising and predicting other people’s reactions to behaviour
Restrictive/repetitive behaviours:
- Repeating certain behaviours, words or phrases
- A lasting, intense interest in particular topics, such as numbers, details, or facts
- Passion for small, intricate details, such as for parts of objects
- Getting upset by slight changes in a routine
- Being more or less sensitive than other people to sensory input, such as light, noise, clothing, or temperature
These are just some of the most frequently experienced symptoms of ASD in children. In addition to the above, your child might also face high levels of stress and anxiety. Anxiety and stress are a normal part of your child’s development, but children with autism experience these types of emotions more intensely and more often than others. Often, these symptoms are misconstrued as ‘acting out’ or behaving in an unruly manner.
Attempts to explain your child’s symptoms to others can sometimes fall on deaf ears, as people may think that they are merely acting out. While many children are diagnosed with autism early on in their life, others can go for years without a diagnosis and therefore be misunderstood and treated unfairly.
At Psymplicity Healthcare, we understand your struggles, and we’re here to help. Following a thorough private autism assessment, during which we will consider the characteristics, frequency and duration of your child’s symptoms, you will receive a private autism diagnosis for your child. Our therapists and other specialists across the CAMHS teams will work with your child to help them manage and live with their ASD symptoms. We will also explain how they can stop these symptoms from affecting their education, social skills, and ability to tackle tasks. We’re not only here to listen and understand; we’re here to help.
