What is a family issue?
The term “family issue” can be used to describe a number of situations and interactions that have a significant impact on one or more family members. Examples of family issues include parents separating, death, a family member with a severe or ongoing illness, financial problems, sibling rivalry and domestic abuse along with many others.
There’s often an expectation that we should strive to have the “perfect” family, but such expectations are unrealistic. Every family experiences ups and downs, and it’s not uncommon to argue or experience issues from time to time.
Tension between family members can build up for many reasons, and it may well be the case that you’d benefit from speaking to an impartial family therapist who can offer an alternative perspective and help you to make sense of the situation.
Some people endure unbearable family situations for long periods without being able to resolve them — often despite their best attempts. In these cases, the affected family members (children and parents, for example) may benefit from attending sessions together. Where a family member is struggling with their own issues — such as depression — that are affecting their day-to-day life and relationships, it can be beneficial for them to receive therapeutic support as an individual or with the people it affects most (such as a spouse, sibling or child).
Every family is unique, which means that one family’s issues will differ significantly from the next. That’s why there’s no such thing as a “standard” approach to family therapy. At Psymplicity, we personalise our treatment plans to suit your needs and the specific challenges you face. Our team of psychotherapists can work with you on an individual basis or as a whole family.
What types of family issues are there?
Family issues come in many different forms and stem from a variety of situations and experiences. While some issues are more common than others, any circumstance that causes unrest and tension within the family unit without a resolution in sight can be considered an issue. The following are common examples of family issues:

- Persistent arguments, often with a similar theme and no resolution
- Stonewalling, or refusing to communicate in situations that require it, such as arguments and disputes that need to be resolved
- Domestic violence
- Feeling scared or as if you are walking on eggshells around certain family members
- Regular misunderstandings
- Inability to communicate
- Feeling lonely and disconnected from your family
These are just some of the most common situations that affect families, but there are many more that fall under the broad umbrella of “family issues”. As one of the leading specialist clinics for family therapy in the UK, we can help you and your family reach a resolution.
At Psymplicity, we understand, and we’re here to help. Following a thorough assessment of your situation, we will put together a bespoke treatment plan to relieve you of the baggage affecting your daily life and those of your loved ones.

The Psymplicity approach to treating family issues
At Psymplicity, we adopt an integrated approach to a wide range of family issues. We’ll tailor your treatment plan, which will likely comprise specialist family therapy and counselling. Depending on the nature of the issue, this could be individual or couples therapy, or group sessions. Even if a specific member who plays a pivotal role in the family dynamic does not wish to see a family therapist, other family members can still benefit from treatment.
The prescribed family therapy treatment for individuals will depend on the issue and might include a psychiatric or psychological assessment to gain a better understanding of their behaviour. For example, an adolescent who struggles to adapt to secondary school and frequently truants may undergo a psychological assessment to discover potential underlying neurological or learning issues that might be causing difficulty. In this situation, a clinical psychologist can recommend sessions with an educational psychologist for the young person and their parents to identify approaches that improve confidence in learning and returning to the school environment. Another solution could be self-esteem counselling to help the individual communicate assertively, rather than aggressively, which can build confidence.
Treatment for family issues may include the following:
The key to successful family therapy is a systemic approach that views the family as a system or unit. Our specialist family therapists strive to help members gain greater awareness of how their family functions as a whole and the vital part each person plays. The goal is not to place blame on a single individual but to understand how all members contribute to a particular dynamic. For example, if one family member has a computer game problem, a family therapist may invite all the members to look at how they avoid communication and intimacy, which might lead to the conclusion that the individual’s problem stems from a lack of proper engagement. The goal of family therapy would be to explore this behaviour and experiment with ways the family can connect in more fulfilling ways, fostering a collaborative approach where the family tackles issues together.
Your family treatment plan
Following our in-depth assessment and subsequent family issues diagnosis, you’ll benefit from a personalised and balanced treatment approach that prioritises understanding and resolving the issue(s) and reducing or eliminating the impact it has on the family dynamic.
Step One
To ensure a perfectly tailored treatment plan, we begin with a professional assessment or your family concerns and produce a personalised assessment report.
Step Two
Our expert family therapists will evaluate your needs and create a bespoke treatment plan that suits you and your family. We have a deep-rooted understanding of the specific benefits associated with each form of treatment and will talk you through these during your appointment.
Step Three
Family issues vary in nature and complexity, which is why we often recommend follow-up appointments to review progress, discuss any concerns and implement new therapy approaches to help your family become a stronger unit.
Do you have issues within your family?
No family is without testing times and we all occasionally get frustrated with our parents, siblings, children or spouses; it’s a normal part of growth and typically makes the family unit stronger. But when family issues regularly go unresolved and are impacting the physical or mental health or quality of life of those involved, this may signal that it’s time to consider getting an outside perspective from a professional family therapist.
Family issues can comprise anything from sibling rivalry and unrest following a divorce to domestic abuse, so if you’re not sure whether the specific issue impacting your family is serious enough to warrant professional help, it’s always worth getting in touch. Left untreated, the problem can fester and result in a hostile or upsetting environment not just for those directly involved but also friends and those outside of the immediate family.
Although some situations are more complex than others and no amount of therapy will permanently stop disagreements, we believe that every family should have the necessary resources at their disposal to be happy and healthy. As part of your bespoke treatment plan, you’ll receive personalised family therapy that provides a solution to the issues plaguing your family. Our specialist family therapists will not only help you find a resolution but also enjoy stronger relationships and tackle future issues together with an open mind.
