What is OCD?
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a psychological condition that causes individuals to experience obsessive thoughts and perform compulsive behaviours. These thoughts cannot be controlled and are not wanted, and the individual is unable to stop them, which can cause overwhelming anxiety. While the person may be aware that these thoughts and behaviours are not rational or justified, they are still unable to control their compulsions.
OCD may be confused with obsessive personality disorder. An individual with an obsessive personality attempts to exercise control over everything they do. They may set themselves unrealistic standards and despair when they inevitably can’t live up to them.
The crucial difference between OCD and an obsessive personality is that the latter believes that their way of thinking is the correct way. While it can impact relationships with others because of their high expectations, it does not lead to individuals to act out behaviours they cannot control. For people with OCD, the condition can be debilitating, and they are unable to stop the thoughts and actions that mitigate them, even if they are causing their life to become dysfunctional.
For someone suffering from OCD, their brain is continuously signalling that they are in danger. It triggers a fight-or-flight response, which causes stress, and it’s only by completing their set routine that they can achieve temporary relief.
What are the symptoms of OCD?
OCD is a unique and challenging condition in that it doesn’t just trigger obsessive thoughts but also compulsive behaviours as a coping mechanism. Because OCD can present in many ways, it can be difficult to recognise the symptoms, but there are common obsessive thoughts that can trigger certain, common behaviours.

Obsessive thoughts:
- Fear of contamination
- Fear of harm
- Unwanted sexual thoughts
- Religious obsession
- Fear of losing control
- Need for perfectionism
Compulsive behaviours :
- Cleaning and washing in a ritualistic way, for example, for a specific amount of time or according to the same pattern
- Checking and rechecking objects, including plugs, windows or doors
- Carrying out repetitive behaviour
These are just some of the most frequently experienced symptoms of OCD. While OCD can present in infinite ways, behaviours typically fall into one of five categories:
- Checking
- Contamination / mental contamination
- Symmetry and ordering
- Ruminations / intrusive thoughts
- Hoarding
Attempts to explain your symptoms to others can sometimes fall on deaf ears. You know that it’s not a simple case of having specific tendencies; OCD can affect your relationships, social life and career, as the obsessive thoughts and subsequent urges can completely dominate, causing you to feel that you need to act immediately.
At Psymplicity Healthcare, we understand, and we’re here to help. Following a thorough assessment of your symptoms, including their frequency and duration, as well as your medical history, we can diagnose your OCD and develop a bespoke OCD treatment plan to help you manage your symptoms.
Book an appointment to see how we can help you banish the stress, frustration and intrusive thoughts preventing you from living a fulfilling life. During your consultation, you’ll receive the diagnosis you’ve been waiting for, along with a bespoke plan of treatment for OCD.

The Psymplicity approach to OCD treatment
At Psymplicity Healthcare, we provide an integrated approach to OCD treatment. Using medication or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), or a combination of the two, can be highly effective for treating OCD. Research shows that some individuals respond well to medication that increases serotonin uptake, while a specific strand of CBT known as Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) can help reduce symptoms.
During this OCD treatment, you will be asked to perform feats that you previously would have avoided in a gradual and gentle manner. Your specialist will then help you find alternative ways of reacting that are more helpful and beneficial.
CBT is extremely effective at managing the urge to fight or flight that is ever-present, as it centres around identifying harmful thoughts and creating new neural pathways that reduce anxiety. The more you resist the usual compulsive behaviour, the stronger your alternative, healthier behaviour becomes. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which revolves around accepting and even embracing your condition, can also be successful at treating OCD and may be considered as an option for your treatment plan.
Your OCD treatment plan
Following our in-depth assessment and subsequent OCD diagnosis, you’ll benefit from a personalised and balanced treatment approach that prioritises managing your symptoms and reducing the impact of the condition on your life.
Step One
To ensure a perfectly tailored treatment plan, we begin with a professional OCD diagnosis and produce a personalised assessment report, which you’re welcome to share with your GP.
Step Two
Our experts will evaluate your particular treatment and medication needs and create a bespoke treatment plan that suits you. We have a deep-rooted understanding of the specific benefits associated with each commonly prescribed medication and therapeutic treatment, which we will discuss with you during your appointment.
Step Three
OCD patients need continued care and support, which is why we recommend follow-up appointments to review progress, discuss any concerns and adjust medication doses to help you on your path to recovery.
