Autism in Children
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a condition caused by differences in brain development, and people of any age can be on the spectrum – although the condition is usually recognised when the patient is at a young age. Why these differences occur is not yet known, but at Psymplicity Healthcare, we’ve had years of experience treating young people (as well as adults) with the condition and can quickly recognise the signs no matter where the patient is on the autistic spectrum.
Many people with ASD will exhibit differences in how they socialise and interact with others, as well as how they behave and learn in different situations or environments. ASD traits and abilities can vary greatly from person to person. For example, while some people with ASD can be extremely gifted in certain skills, others can be severely challenged and non-verbal. For some, ASD barely has an impact on day-to-day life.
ASD is developed before the age of 3, although many children will not receive a formal diagnosis until later in life. While there is no cure for ASD, early intervention can make a significant difference to the lives of children, with some reporting a reduction in ASD traits over time.
If you think your child is showing signs of ASD, complete this quick test to find out whether the traits they have are similar to those of autistic children.
