What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a practical talking therapy aimed at changing negative attitudes and behavioural patterns by focusing on the thoughts that triggered them. This technique is partially based on psychologist B. F. Skinner’s theory, which analyses human behaviour as a response to a stimulus. Cognitive theorists also believe these behaviours can be changed by thought alone, and CBT is the method of doing just that.
Think of a time you perceived an object, location or animal as scary, but in reality it was unlikely to cause you harm. Through CBT from experts at Psymplicity, you can recognise and reason with this belief, and instead of running away from the stimulus (the behavioural response), you simply go about your day as if it isn’t there.
Ultimately, CBT aims to find practical solutions to everyday problems. Psymplicity’s CBT therapists will ask you about the thoughts and beliefs that are affecting your ability to enjoy daily activities and help you overcome them – work will be required on both sides to enact a lasting change.
Psymplicity’s London-based CBT therapists give patients the tools they need to break free from negative thoughts and behaviours. Together, you will agree on exercises you can practice on your own, which will help you break the pattern. From getting common tasks done to feeling comfortable in social environments, CBT can help you in multiple ways, and in some cases, it’s truly transformative.

What is CBT like?
CBT is a practical talking therapy that teaches you actionable methods of managing negative thoughts and behaviours. During your first two Psymplicity CBT sessions, we’ll help you familiarise yourself with the techniques used and how they work. After that, your Psymplicity CBT therapist will show you how to use concrete tools to identify harmful thoughts before they cause an unhelpful reaction. This process will encourage you to take control of your mind and avoid falling into the same patterns.
For example, CBT for anxiety involves identifying the specific thoughts and situations that cause your body to sweat, freeze or want to run away. Once you understand the thought, your therapist will show you a different way to approach it. This might be reframing it with a positive thought or simply acknowledging how and why it is unrealistic. Then, when these thoughts arise as you go about your day, you have the tools to lessen or even eradicate your usual reaction.
To get the biggest benefit from your CBT therapy, you need to apply what you learn during the sessions. To help you do this, your CBT therapist will assign you tasks to complete and exercises to practice. You can think of these tasks as “homework”, meant to engrain these tools and your new, positive thoughts into your mind so that it becomes easier and more natural for you to do.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is not a quick fix. It’s an engaging form of therapy that can take from five to twenty weeks to achieve lasting results. During your initial consultation at our London psychiatry clinic, or online, we’ll explore your symptoms and experiences in detail to determine if CBT is right for you.
