What is EMDR therapy?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. Frances Shapiro, who developed EMDR in 1986, found that eye movements reduce the intensity of disturbing thoughts and feelings under certain conditions. EMDR is used to alleviate the impact of traumatic events such as car accidents, violence and war. However, more recently, it is used to treat non-trauma issues such as panic and anxiety disorders, low self-esteem and much more.

For example, say you had a traumatic car crash in the past, you may then break into a cold sweat and experience anxiety whenever you get into a car. Although you are fully aware that you shouldn’t be feeling this way about something as simple as getting into a car, your body still reacts as if it has anticipated the original trauma. The traumatic memory is ‘stuck’ and therefore causes vivid flashbacks, intrusive thoughts and nightmares — all of which are common symptoms of PTSD. EMDR therapy is used to replace these thoughts and processing issues, replacing them with more positive thoughts than genuinely benefit you.

At Psymplicity, we follow a client-focused approach, putting your mental wellbeing above all else to provide you with the personalised care and attention you need. Our London EMDR sessions are typically used on a short-term basis, but there is no limit to how many sessions you can have. Our top priority is improving your quality of life, and we are motivated to make that a reality.

What is EMDR therapy like?

When it comes to EMDR therapy, no two cases or appointments are the same. A psychiatric assessment and the subsequent diagnosis and treatment at Psymplicity are 100% personalised to your symptoms, circumstances and what you hope to achieve with treatment.

During your EMDR therapy in our London clinic or online, you’ll reconnect with emotionally disturbing material while simultaneously focusing on external stimuli. Your EMDR therapist will guide you through lateral eye movements (commonly used external stimulus), but a variety of other stimuli such as hand-tapping and audio stimulation are often used. EMDR therapy helps you to access the traumatic memory network, so that thought process is enhanced, replacing negative thoughts with adaptive thoughts and information that benefit you. The new associations result in complete information processing, eliminate emotional distress, aid new learning and develop cognitive insights.

There is no set amount of sessions; however, alleviation of symptoms can occur very quickly, and EMDR is usually delivered over a much shorter period than other treatments.

At Psymplicity Healthcare, we not only understand how difficult mental health issues are to deal with, but also how daunting it can be to seek professional help. But the reality is that the sooner you seek treatment for these types of issues, the better. With a professional assessment and diagnosis, you will finally have the answers you need. And with specialist EMDR therapy, you can banish the hardship of the symptoms of trauma, PTSD and other mental health conditions.
