What is a neuropsychological assessment?
A neuropsychological assessment is a performance-based test to determine whether your cognitive functions have suffered from an illness or injury. It can also assess if an individual has received the right diagnosis, or if long-term medications have caused brain damage.
During the assessment, a clinical psychologist will test a variety of brain functions. The tests will depend on what needs to be assessed. You don’t need to be referred to receive a psychological assessment. You can self-refer if you suspect your diagnosis to be wrong or you’re deciding to return to school or work after an injury.
The neuropsychological assessment will help you receive the treatment you need. It will assess your attention, thinking, calculating, problem-solving, and processing speed abilities. Following your assessment, you may need further evaluations to ensure you received the right diagnosis.

What is a neuropsychological assessment like?
A neuropsychological assessment will start with general questions about your symptoms, history, and background. You will be allowed to take someone in the room with you, and they could also be asked questions about your wellbeing. However, your psychologist will ask them to leave you alone to complete the next part of the test.
After getting an understanding of your situations and struggles, your therapist will conduct a series of written and oral tests. These can vary from general intelligence tests, memory, language, visuoperceptual and visuospatial skill assessments, and executive functions tests. The type of test will depend on your specific case.
Overall, the neuropsychological assessment at Psymplicity can last anywhere from 2 to 8 hours. Patients can encounter different levels of difficulty and therefore need more time to complete all the tests. The assessment is usually done in one day. However, there are cases where people need to break it down to multiple days, due to mental fatigue or slow motor/cognitive speed. At Psymplicity, we ensure our patients are never felt rushed to complete these tests.
There is no need to be nervous for a neuropsychological assessment. Your therapist will put you through optimal conditions to deliver your best possible performance. This is not a test you can either pass or fail — there is no right or wrong answer. Try to get a good night’s sleep before the assessment day. Eat and drink plenty before coming in and make sure you have your medical and/or academic records if needed.
