Dr Ponsford is a Child and Adolescent Consultant Psychiatrist who graduated with honours from Liverpool Medical School in 2005.
Following this she completed her psychiatry training in South West London & St George’s Trust and South London & Maudsley gaining experience in National Specialist Anxiety and Depression teams, Eating Disorders, Neuropsychiatry, Liaison Psychiatry and General Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (CAMHS). These areas included Looked After Children’s teams and the Child Sexual Abuse teams. This rich training experience enables Dr Ponsford to work with both highly complex cases as well as general presentations with children from 6-years old up to 18-years old.
Dr Ponsford has worked as a psychiatrist for the NHS for the past 16 years and for the past 8 years she has been a Consultant Psychiatrist working in both in-patient and out-patient settings focusing on Eating Disorders and General Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Neurodevelopmental conditions.
Due to her work and experience within Eating Disorders, Neuropsychiatry and Liaison psychiatry she has particular skills in working with patients with physical health conditions, physical presentations and working collaboratively with paediatricians and neurologists.
She has training in Systemic Family Therapy and has worked with this model in both Eating Disorder services and within General Child and Adolescent services (CAMHS).
Whilst working as an NHS consultant Dr Ponsford was the Croydon Child and Adolescent lead for ADHD services developing pathways and also contributed to trust wide ADHD service development within South London and Maudsley (SLAM). In addition to this role Dr Ponsford has had lead Managerial roles within the NHS including Safeguarding Doctor for Croydon, managing the Continuing Professional Development Program for CAMHS Consultants working in SLAM, chairing the Medical Advisory Committee and supervising all Speciality Trainees with their out of hour work.
Dr Ponsford continues to work as an Honorary Consultant in South London and Maudsley Trust where she is the Principal Investigator for drug trial looking at a new anti-depressant medication to be used in adolescents.

Doctor Hayley Ponsford
Dr Ponsford has worked in many areas of Child and Adolescent mental health enabling her to assess and manage a wide range of mental health disorders seen in young people. She has excellent communication skills, wide breadth of experience and knowledge especially in the diagnosis and management of ADHD and ASD.
Her systemic training in Family Therapy allows for a ‘whole child’ approach to assessment and management incorporating the experience and assessment of the young person alongside information gathered from family and, when needed, school or other agencies. This enables a holistic assessment, timely recommendations, and appropriate treatment options. She works within a multi-disciplinary team to ensure your child gets the right treatment and approach. Her ability to diagnose and formulate allows you and your child to understand what is happening and make the right plan to manage the disorder and therefore work towards recovery.
She also takes an active role in teaching and training both for fellow Consultants but also Medical Students, Junior Doctors, Paediatricians, Allied Health Professionals, Schools and Families.
Dr Ponsford is a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, she is a section 12 Approved Clinician and has full indemnity insurance. Prior to becoming a Psychiatrist Dr Ponsford started paediatric training and has completed the MRCPaediatrics and Child health part 1A. She had planned to become a Paediatrician before meeting a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and changed her training to focus on this speciality and has never looked back.
