Doctor Joshua Harwood's approach
Dr Joshua Harwood is a Chartered Clinical Psychologist registered with both the British Psychological Society and the Health and Care Professions Council. He is a full member of the Division for Clinical Psychology.
Dr Harwood currently works for the NHS in South London, at the Centre for Parent and Child Support. This is a specialist Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS), however Dr Harwood specialises in working with parents with mental health difficulties, meaning he has the experience and qualifications to work with adults, children, teenagers and families as a whole.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr Harwood is a Clinical Research Psychologist at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, a department of King’s College London. Here he develops and evaluates innovative clinical interventions to help children and their parents deal with a wide range of mental health conditions, in particular conditions that make being a parent even more difficult. He is a lecturer in Clinical Skills at the Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families and an Honorary Lecturer at University College London.
Dr Harwood is trained in Cognitive Behavioural Therapies (CBT) and Systemic Therapies, although he is able to integrate learning from a wide range of therapeutic techniques into his clinical work. He believes in forming truly collaborative relationships with clients, taking into account all of their needs, which enables them to make the changes that they desire. He is comfortable in exploring and using psychological principles to develop an understanding of a client’s past, and how that impacts on their current behaviour, decisions, and relationships. However, he is also able to conduct an in-depth assessment of his client’s current mental health needs and use this information to enable his clients to achieve long term improvements in their mental wellbeing.
