Consultant Clinical Psychologist with 15 years experience working therapeutically with children, adolescents, adults and their families.
Extensive experience conducting clinical assessments, using a variety of psychometric tools, in-depth interviews and neuro-psychological assessments.
Provide interventions to parents/carers who have not been able to utilise manualised parenting interventions, focusing on the deeper issues related to what prevents them from putting boundaries in place, developing healthy relationships, etc. These interventions are particularly informed by attachment and trauma theory.
Provide interventions for co-morbid and highly complex clinical presentations e.g. anxiety with comorbid depression, personality disorders.
Offer CBT using specific models to treat anxiety, depression, PTSD, OCD, psychosis, etc.
Offer Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to address PTSD and Complex Trauma.
I am a BPS registered supervisor offering clinical supervision to Clinical Psychologists, Trainees, Assistant Psychologists and other mental health staff. I have reached the level of Consultant Clinical Psychologist within the NHS, including being interviewed by BPS assessors to ensure that I meet this standard.

Doctor Karen McCarty's approach

Dr Karen McCarty completed her BSc in Psychology, including an additional research year with the Institute of Child Health and Great Ormond Street Hospital. She worked as an Assistant Psychologist in West London for one year before attaining a place on the DClin Psy training programme at the University of Hertfordshire in 2003.

After completing her doctorate in 2006, Dr McCarty worked in community Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services for 15 years, providing specialist psychological and neuropsychological assessment, formulation and treatment to children, adolescents and their families. In addition, she provided clinical input, supervision and training to a 16-bed secure facility for Looked After Children. She has experience providing Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, Mentalization Based Therapy, EMDR and Compassion Focussed Therapy both individually and in groups for a wide range of difficulties.

Dr McCarty has provided teaching on the University of Essex and University of Hertfordshire DClin Psy courses and MSc Research in Clinical Psychology programme at the University of Hertfordshire. She has also contributed to teaching on the UCL and Institute of Child Health, Developmental Examination Course. She has a keen interest in clinical governance, and has been a member of the CAMHS clinical governance group throughout her career.

Dr McCarty is a BPS registered supervisor offering clinical supervision to Clinical Psychologists, Trainees, Assistant Psychologists and other clinical staff. She has provided group supervision and consultation to educational staff, Social Care and health care managers within the community and a secure unit.

Dr McCarty is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and has provided leadership as the Trust-wide Lead for Psychological Services and Clinical Lead for Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services in the NHS. Currently she is providing work for the NHS part time and also focusing on private practice. She provides interventions using a collaborative approach, putting the needs of clients first and adapting treatment to provide the best outcomes. Her enthusiasm and energy for her work remain a constant.
