Doctor Karen McCarty's approach
Dr Karen McCarty completed her BSc in Psychology, including an additional research year with the Institute of Child Health and Great Ormond Street Hospital. She worked as an Assistant Psychologist in West London for one year before attaining a place on the DClin Psy training programme at the University of Hertfordshire in 2003.
After completing her doctorate in 2006, Dr McCarty worked in community Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services for 10 years, providing specialist psychological and neuropsychological assessment, formulation and treatment to children, adolescents and their families. In addition, she provided clinical input, supervision and training to a 16-bed secure facility for Looked After Children. She has experience providing Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, Mentalization Based Therapy, EMDR and Compassion Focussed Therapy both individually and in groups for a wide range of difficulties.
Dr McCarty has provided teaching on the University of Essex and University of Hertfordshire DClin Psy courses and MSc Research in Clinical Psychology programme at the University of Hertfordshire. She has also contributed to teaching on the UCL and Institute of Child Health, Developmental Examination Course. She has a keen interest in clinical governance, and has been a member of the CAMHS clinical governance group throughout her career.
Dr McCarty is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and until recently was providing leadership as the Trust-wide Lead for Psychological Services and Clinical Lead for the Emotional Wellbeing and Mental Health Service (EWMHS) for NELFT. Currently she is providing work for the NHS part time and also focusing on developing a private practice. Her enthusiasm and energy for her work remain a constant.
