What is panic disorder?
We all know what it’s like to experience fear and anxiety. Both are natural and often instinctive emotions that can occur during situations such as job interviews, first dates or exams. We might also feel anxiety over existential issues such as the transition from middle to old age or when experiencing a serious illness.
However, a panic disorder can cause individuals to feel anxiety, fear and intense panic on a daily basis. Panic disorders often stem from a negative or traumatic experience. Socialising can also be a trigger for anxiety. For example, you may have received some bad news and experienced anxiety during a car journey home. This panic then becomes generalised, which can cause a similar sense of panic when you next drive, regardless of whether there is any reason to be anxious. This can become debilitating, as you may start to avoid driving altogether. Other causes of panic include relationships, aspects of your work life, clinical settings, and illnesses and germs.
At Psymplicity, our specialists have years of experience treating panic disorder, and we are here to help.
What are the symptoms of panic disorder?
Panic disorder symptoms tend to begin during late adolescence or young adulthood, but this is not always the case. There is no single “sign” of a panic attack, as symptoms may be physical or emotional. The most common symptoms of panic disorder include:

Emotional:
- Frequent and acute feelings of fear
- Feeling out of control
- Feeling anxious in anticipation of a panic attack
- Feeling scared of and avoiding situations where a panic attack has previously occurred
Physical:
- Heart beating faster and more loudly than normal
- Cold or hot sweats
- Fast and shallow breaths
- A tingling sensation in the hands
- Weakness or dizziness
- Tingly or numb hands
- Chest pain
- Stomach pain
Statistics show that up to 30% of those who have a panic disorder become housebound. An individual with panic disorder can end up feeling incredibly lonely and misunderstood and may experience feelings of disbelief, frustration, sadness and despair. Since everyone experiences anxiety and fear to some extent, people with panic disorders may worry about opening up to others out of embarrassment or shame. It can be difficult to explain how severely the condition is impacting your life, which itself can lead to further anxiety.
At Psymplicity Healthcare, we understand, and we’re here to help. Following a thorough assessment of your symptoms, including their frequency and duration, as well as your medical history, we can diagnose panic disorder and help relieve you of the baggage of living with your symptoms and all the ways they affect your daily life.
Book an appointment to see how we can help you banish fear and anxiety and improve your quality of life. During your consultation, you’ll receive the diagnosis you’ve been waiting for, along with a bespoke plan of treatment for your panic disorder.

The Psymplicity approach to panic disorder treatment
At Psymplicity Healthcare, we provide an integrated approach to panic attack treatment. Using an advanced combination of medication and modern psychological and coaching techniques, we’ll tailor a treatment plan to suit your needs. The process will begin with an initial consultation, through which we will gain a clear understanding of your symptoms and triggers.
Treatment shouldn’t be yet another distraction or cause for anxiety, which is why we treat every patient with minimal disruption to their everyday life. Your treatment plan may require a course of medication to reduce symptoms along with cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) or psychotherapy. At Psymplicity, there is no “standard” treatment for panic disorder; we tailor your treatment to you to ensure it is effective.
Your panic disorder treatment plan
Following our in-depth assessment and subsequent panic disorder diagnosis, you’ll benefit from a personalised and balanced treatment approach that prioritises managing your symptoms and reducing the impact of the condition on your life.
Step One
To ensure a perfectly tailored treatment plan, we begin with a professional panic disorder diagnosis and produce a personalised assessment report, which you’re welcome to share with your GP.
Step Two
Our experts will evaluate your particular CBT, psychotherapy and medication needs and create a bespoke treatment plan that suits you. We have a deep-rooted understanding of the specific benefits of each treatment and can talk you through these during your appointment.
Step Three
Panic disorder patients need continued care and support, which is why we recommend follow-up appointments to review progress, discuss any concerns and adjust medication doses to help you on your path to recovery.
