Gelareh Lak

Gelareh is a mental health professional with a background in both Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy and Applied Behaviour Analysis. She completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and Postgraduate Certificate in Autism and Behavioural Science in Canada and nearing completion of her Masters Degree in Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy.

Gelareh has a wealth of experience working with adults and children with a variety of diagnoses such ASD, anxiety, depression, panic attacks, obsessive compulsive disorder and trauma. Gelareh has strong clinical, and interpersonal skills, and can provide comprehensive support and services to clients with varied age groups, backgrounds and needs.

Gelareh has a passion for helping others and aims to help clients through creating a safe space for awareness, challenging faulty thinking, and implementing strategies for change and growth.

The Dr would like me to send her a written account of my experiences living with ADHD. I am pleased I have had the assessment and consultation as it has helped me to understand my neurodivergent brain and to lose some of the awful shame I felt about never being good / competent/ intelligent enough.

Recently I decided as recommended by a friend to have a ADHD assessment. Much to my amazement I was diagnosed with ADHD. My whole life suddenly felt very normal for the first time in what felt like forever.

The psychiatrist I spoke to made me feel seen and heard for the first time in my life. I always felt like an oddball when explaining my symptoms to a g.p. Yet, today I was made to feel understood. I cannot thank him enough for his help today. To realise it wasn’t all because I was a bad kid, it was because I have autism and a.d.h.d. Has made me feel compassion towards myself instead of shame.

The process was so straightforward and simple. I wish I had done this sooner. All the years of anxiety and feeling different, changing myself to fit with people. I could cry with relief. I've suspected for years but still doubted that an assessment/diagnosis would clarify things, more just say I needed to concentrate or pay attention. However, it explains everything and I feel freed and validated for the first time in my whole life.

It was a review appointment with my Doctor following 6 months shared care. As always the appointment is informative and helpful. My Doctor has helped make a huge difference to my life. So glad I’ve had his continuous care over the last 18 months. It’s been worth the initial teething problems with Admin at the practice. Which also seems to have improved.
